Darien Elementary fifth graders came to life as characters from their favorite books in the annual 2018 Wax Museum of Reading Event! The event is a fundraiser for the class trip to a springtime Milwaukee Brewers game. The event was held over two days and featured students from all fifth grade classes at Darien. Delavan-Darien summer school students performed in the musical production of "Character Matters," directed by Kirsten Andreoni. Filled with humor and fantastic songs, Character Matters is a wildly fun way to spark classroom discussion about character issues and conflicts (when, for example, should you be honest and when should you avoid hurting someone's feelings?). And, the show helps students improve reading, vocabulary, reading comprehension, performance and music skills, class camaraderie and teamwork, and numerous social skills, all while enabling students to be part of a truly fun and creative experience they will never forget!

The combined choirs of Delavan-Darien Schools performed together for the first time last night on the DDHS auditorium stage. The Delavan-Darien School District Choir Festival was a collaborative effort by the elementary, middle school and high school choral music teachers, Ms. Berg, Ms. Guzman, Ms. Ropers-Rosendahl and Mr. Larson. The concert began with the 4th and 5th grade Honor choir from Darien Elementary directed by Ms. Guzman and Ms. Berg. Then, the Phoenix Singers, directed by Ms. Ropers-Rosendahl took the stage followed by the Lydian choir from the high school. These choirs are filled with the very best vocalists in our schools. It was powerful when all three choirs joined their voices for the finale; a rousing rendition of the song OYE, sung entirely in Spanish. This song comes from Acapulco, where inner city children were asked what they wanted to convey to the world in a song. Their answer was simple: "to listen." Listening in English translates into "Oye" in Spanish. Our audience was privileged to listen to these excellent voices in concert and look forward to the second annual DDSD Choir Festival next spring. #DDCometProud of our talented, and nationally-recognized music students, staff and community!

Turtle Creek Elementary School students celebrated Cindo de Mayo at a school-wide assembly. After learning about the meaning of the Mexican holiday — which commemorates the triumph of the Mexican army over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 — students performed traditional Mexican dances in authentic, hand-crafted costumes. The event was coordinated by Dual Language Teacher Ms. Vicky Barquero, a native Mexican, who herself made most of the costumes.
